It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our husband, father, grandfather and friend, Jerry Peter Markewich on October 31, 2017. Dad was born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan on June 9, 1947 to Peter and Mary (Maroniuk) Markewich and spent his young life helping his father and grandfather farm and where he attended school in Dana and Bruno, Sk. In 1969 dad married the love of his life, Mary. In 1973 he attained his BSc in Civil Engineering and worked for Saskatchewan Minerals and resided in Maple Creek where their children were born in 1975 and 1977. In 1978 he continued his education and attained his BEd from the U of S, thus starting his 30 year career at E.D. Feehan High School for the Greater Saskatoon Catholic School Board. During those years he met several life-long friends who shared his enthusiasm of hunting and fishing. He also had a passion for firearms from an early age and became an excellent marksman attaining many trophies and awards. He eventually built his “cabin” in the woods, which included a certified shooting range for his personal enjoyment and that of his family and friends. Dad could be found in the basement during the cold winter months making thousands of rounds of ammunition which he then shot all spring and summer. The fall of 2017 would be his last hunt, where, despite declining health he & a good friend were out every day for nearly two weeks. Dad had many wonderful friends over the years, students-turned-friends and a large extended family to whom he would share his vast knowledge of all things outdoors. After retirement Dad was able to do some travelling in the winter months, with Hawaii becoming a special place to him. Dad was predeceased by his parents in 1987 & 1997 and he leaves behind his wife of 48 years, Mary (Bens); his son Rod (Stacey) Markewich with grandsons Danton, Hunter & Ryder; and his daughter Leanne (Jeremy) Franklin, all of the Saskatoon area. His extended family includes those from the Markewich and Maroniuk families as well as Mary’s siblings, their spouses and nieces and nephews, many of whom were more like friends. than extended family. Mary, Rod & Leanne would like to thank those unknown individuals who found dad in the yard and were quick to administer CPR and call for assistance. We appreciate this selfless act of kindness and take comfort in knowing that Dad passed away in one of his favorite places, doing what he loved.
