Andreas Henry Evjen , known affectionately as Andy, passed away at the age of 90 on August 15th 2024, in the home he and his late wife, Elsie, shared for more than 60 years. Andy was born in Tisdale, Sk on January 5th 1934, to his parents Erik and Annie Evjen. They lived in Eldersley until 1936, then moved to Star City; where his younger sister, Helen, was born. Andy’s father was a member of the Regina Rifles Regiment and was sent overseas during WW2. He was wounded on D-Day and returned home to receive re-training, which led the family to settle in Saskatoon, Sk. Andy finished school in Saskatoon where he soon met, the love of his life Elsie Lorna Holmes. They married in the Apostolic Church on July 31st, 1954. Together, they raised 3 children: Marilyn, Dale and Brent. He spent special time camping and fishing with his kids then the family purchased a cabin at Lac La Peche, where they made countless memories. Andy worked several jobs over the years but finally settled on a Corrections Officer at the Saskatoon Correctional Center; where he stayed until he retired in 1996. Andy and Elsie were very proud of his Norwegian heritage and embraced cultural activities together. He served multiple terms as president of the Saskatoon Scandinavian Club, making many lifelong friends. They travelled to many cultural events in the US where he began honing his skills as a woodcarver. He studied under several master carvers from Norway and mastered the art of acanthus carving. From there he branched out to many other carving forms like bird carvings, caricatures and relief carvings. As evidenced by his demonstrations and participation at the Norwegian Pavilion at Saskatoon Folkfest, his mastery of the carving arts became an important part of his retirement. Whether he was at home or spending winters with Elsie in sunny Arizona, he could often be found whittling a tiny mouse or a family of geese, simply for the joy of carving. Andy shone as a husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. At times when any of us felt lost or lonely, he was always there with open ears and arms. He will be deeply missed by all his family and friends. Andy always had so many great stories to tell. Stories that made people feel special, simply by listening. He had a great sense of humour and infectious giggle which always sounded like he was up to no good… Andy never met a cinnamon bun without his name on it. Sadly, Andy was predeceased by his wife, his parents and his sister. His memory will forever be held in the hearts of his surviving family: His children Marilyn (Jim), Dale (Deb) and Brent (Kathy): His 7 grandchildren, Chris (Rodene), Tricia, Joanna (Steve), Kyle (Don), Chad (Cora) Trygve and Steig: His 6 great grandchildren; Tristen, Bailey, Haley (Bailey) Dacey, Ellie and Hannon.
“Grief never ends but it changes. It’s a passage, not a place to stay. Grief is a not a sign of weakness nor lack of faith. It is the Price of Love.”
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Cancer Society or charity of your choice. Cherished Memories Funeral Services is honored to be entrusted with Andy's care.
We love you Dad
