On December 16, 1934, Ann Francis Kabay was born in a farmhouse in Fish Creek Sask. She was the 5th of 6 children born to her mom, Pearl Hyshka/Kabay. Annie enjoyed a quiet farm life and went to school in the local schoolhouse. Mom described a close-knit community; i.e. in winter, they hooked up the horse and sleigh and picked up all of the neighborhood kids to go to school and back. In the summer, when they butchered and roasted a pig, the whole neighborhood shared it.
Mom was partly raised by her grandparents (Maria and Marko Hyshka) who lived with the family. Her Baba (Maria Sikorsky/Hyshka) prayed with her grandchildren every night and encouraged their Catholic faith. Mom spoke often about how very kind the nuns were that she knew.
At the tender age of 16, Mom married Walter Wasylyk, and had six children: Danny, Darlene, Sonya, Sally, Michael and Audrey. Mom had a green thumb and a large vegetable garden. She was excited to see new blooms on her flowers in spring and summer. She loved to crochet, sew and do other crafts with her hands. Mom was recognized for her artistic talent at a young age. She taught her four daughters how to make Ukrainian easter eggs and encouraged creativity in her children at a young age. She taught her daughters how to cook, especially the traditional Ukrainian foods that she grew up with. Mom was a hard worker. When her children got a little older, she started working at SaskTel until she retired there.
Dad passed away at the age of 58 years. Several years later, Mom met Gordon Dyok and they became partners in Humboldt Saskatchewan, and then later, in Saskatoon. They were great company and always made each other laugh. Mom was predeceased by her siblings, Bill Titus, Mike Titus, Mary Kabay/Friske, Walter Kabay and Paul Kabay. Mom was predeceased by dad in 1982. In 2022, Mom lost her son Mikey, and her partner, Gordon Dyok. In 2024, Mom lost her granddaughter, Jasmine. Mom leaves behind her 5 children; Danny, Darlene, Sonya, Sally and Audrey, as well as 8 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. Mom delighted in watching our kids and grandkids grow up. Mom did not always have the easiest life but she taught us many things: - Do not live above your means. - Do not go into debt – ever – unless it’s for something essential, like a home purchase or washer/dryer, etc.
- Be satisfied with the simple pleasures in life – like flowers in the garden. - Recycle and repurpose!
-Animals are precious. We grew up with a variety of small dogs and cats as well as other animals.
- Be satisfied with the simple pleasures in life – like new blooms on your flowers/plants.
Mom was a kind and humble person. She was generous and shared what she had with others. She treasured her friendships in life. She always wanted the best for her children and their loved ones.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the wonderful care staff at the Cozy Nest long term care home in RM of Dundurn. She described the staff there as “family.” Prior to this, mom lived at the Ilarion for several years. We are also grateful to the staff at the Ilarion, in Saskatoon, who made mom feel at home.
Mom left this earth to her heavenly home on January 9th, 2025. Rest in peace, mom.
Cherished Memories is honoured to be entrusted with the care of Annie Wasylyk.
