It is with sadness that the family of Dr Carlos Maningas announces his death on March 13, 2024 after a brief illness.
Carlos is survived by his loving wife of over 67 years, Elsie; his son Carlos Jr (Heather) and his granddaughter Gabrielle (Leo); daughter in-law Annette and her children Faith and Josiah; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by his parents, his siblings and his son Andrew.
Born in Baliwag, Bulacan, Philippines on November 4, 1926, Carlos was the youngest in a large family. He studied medicine and graduated from Santo Tomas University in Manila in 1955. An internship and residency took him to the USA where he met Elsie. They married in Winnipeg in 1957. Carlos’ pursuit of a Pediatric Fellowship had them hopping from Halifax to Saskatoon, Winnipeg, and North Battleford before landing for good back in Saskatoon.
During his time in Saskatoon, in addition to private practice, Dr. Maningas served as Associate Professor of Pediatrics, Director of
Pediatric Outpatient at University Hospital, and Physician in-charge at the School for the Deaf.
Dr. Maningas, or “Doc” as he was known, cared for many generations of children during his over 40 year career in Saskatoon. Always available to his patients and their families, his quiet, reassuring manner had a calming effect at the bedside and at the front door as he continued to make house calls for most of his career.
Carlos was very active in the community with Filcas, Kiwanis and Rotary. He served as Philippine Honorary Consul for Saskatchewan and was a Lifetime Honorary Member of Filcas. The City of Saskatoon recognized Dr Maningas’ community service with the naming of Maningas Bend in the Evergreen neighbourhood.
Carlos was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend, giving freely of his wisdom, time and guidance. He took immense pride in his family. His sense of humour and fun was infectious. Family and friends often gathered at the house for special occasions or just dropped in for visits.
The family would like to thank the physicians, nurses and aides for their compassionate care during his brief stay at Royal University Hospital as well as the staff and support workers at Preston Park 1 for their years of care and friendship.
Visitation is Friday March 15 from 4-9pm. Funeral service will be held on Saturday March 16 at 3pm, both at SNLCF Church 3532 Fairlight Dr Saskatoon. The service will be live streamed at https://www.facebook.com/SNLCFPage
