It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Marcien Joseph “Arthur” Belanger, born the only child of Marie Boisvert and Marcien Belanger at 3:56 in the morning on February 19, 1941, at the General Hospital in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Art passed away peacefully on March 13, 2025, surrounded by his family.
Art spent his formative years growing up in St. Boniface. As he got older, he would spend time between Winnipeg and the uncles' farms in the Biggar area learning the passion he had so loved, farming. Art would always tell those around him that farming was a tough business, so much so that he had to work on the rails from Vancouver to Toronto to support his farming dream. Art eventually realized that farming was not for him and decided to go back to university to study, of course his love, agriculture.
Art continued helping on the farm, spending time between Saskatoon and Biggar. While at the Biggar Bar, Art met the woman who would become the love of his life, Rose. Art and Rose married on May 31, 1968, at the Red Pheasant First Nation Church. They then started their life and family in Saskatoon where they would spend the rest of their lives together.
Art worked several jobs in saskatoon from security guard to meat processor and federal meat inspector at Swifts, then at Olympic Meats which led to his career within Agriculture Canada where after a lengthy career, he would retire from the Ag Development Branch.
Post retirement Art and Rose enjoyed travelling and taking little bus trips, shopping and catching the odd blue jay's game. Let’s not forget Rose dragging Art on the odd casino adventure as well. Art also had a love for fitness, and he truly was a fixture at the YMCA. In addition to the gym Art was a dedicated member of the Saskatchewan Senior Fitness Association and participated in slo-pitch and pickleball activities among other sports that “tickled his fancy”. Art also loved golfing and playing cribbage and let's not forget his Friday night dances! Art enjoyed all these activities well into his 80’s. Art was also an active volunteer, and he was always ready to lend a helping hand wherever and whenever he could.
Art made a lasting impression on everyone he encountered. He was an honest and caring individual, and he always best described himself as a “realist”.
Art was known for his warmth, sense of humor, and loyalty to his family and friends. Whether spending time with loved ones, working around the house and enjoying his time in his wonderful garden, or sharing a quiet moment, Art’s presence brought comfort and joy.
Art is survived by his son Marc and his daughter Marie (Peter), their children Sebastian (Ashley), Stephan and Simone as well as his stepsons Rudy (Wendy) and Bradley (Janine); and grandchildren Ardis, Travis, Lonny and Ayla as well as numerous great grandchildren. Art was predeceased by his wife of 53 years Rose, stepson: Randall, stepdaughter: Denise, his father: Marcien Belanger, and his mother: Marie Belanger (nee Boisvert).
The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the nurses and doctors at St. Paul’s Hospital. We would also like to acknowledge the Very Reverend Father Stefano Penna for his wisdom and guidance though this difficult time. Their warmth, care, insight, and peaceful acceptance helped guide Art and his family through a difficult time, and their compassion will never be forgotten.
