It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Richard Blanchet, beloved father, brother, teacher, and friend, on October 29, 2024, at the age of 66. Born on November 29, 1957, Richard grew up in Pointe-aux-Trembles, Quebec, before moving to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, where he would dedicate his life to his family, his students, and his passion for the natural world. Richard was a teacher for over 35 years, known fondly by many as the “crazy science teacher.” His classroom was filled with life—literally—with tanks of lizards, turtles, fish, and specimens of all kinds. His infectious enthusiasm for science and nature left an indelible mark on students and colleagues alike. Richard’s path to teaching was preceded by work as a technicien de la faune, a role that complemented his deep love of nature. His career began with his early experiences working at a zoo, which only reinforced his fascination with the animal world. More than a teacher, Richard was an outdoorsman at heart, deeply devoted to hunting. From an early age, he found joy in the wilderness, spending countless hours bird and deer hunting. There was no keener eye for identifying birds and other wildlife—he could spot and name them with a naturalist’s precision, a skill he took immense pride in. For Richard, the Saskatchewan landscape was paradise, and he eagerly shared stories of his hunting adventures with friends back home in Quebec. In the latter part of his career, Richard took on a role as a guide at Eagle Creek, where he led school groups on immersive outdoor excursions. He delighted in teaching students the fundamentals of survival—how to track animals, recognize bird calls, and build fires. This was not a job to Richard; it was his calling, a chance to impart his love of the wild to the next generation. Richard was known for his bold, outgoing personality. He never held back with his opinions, sometimes seeming outlandish but always unapologetically himself. His blend of quirks, honesty, and his “not-giving-a-damn” approach to life made him unforgettable to those who knew him. People either loved him or clashed with him—but those who truly understood him admired his authenticity and fierce individuality. Richard was predeceased by his beloved wife in 2017 and his son in early 2023. He is survived by his sons, Simon and Jonathan Blanchet, and his sisters, Lynes and Manon Blanchet. Richard’s resilience in the face of personal loss was profound, shaped by the early passing of his father and the recent loss of his mother. Richard’s memory will be cherished by all who knew him, and his legacy as an educator, hunter, and unapologetically unique individual will continue to inspire.
A Celebration of Richard’s life will be held at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 362, on Monday, December 2, 2024, from 2-4 p.m.
